On June 19, 2017 the association will hold its “China International Nutrition and Health Industry Summit” at the Marriott Renaissance Yu Garden Hotel in Shanghai. This educational industry conference is part of an ongoing series of summits the association hosts in Shanghai, which includes the Sports Nutrition Industry Summit and the Probiotic and Omega-3 Summit.
The Nutrition and Health Summit will be held the day before the Healthplex Nutraceutical China (HNC) Expo, which is organized by UBM Sinoexpo and China Chamber of Commerce and held in conjunction with CPHI and FiAsia Expos.
On October 1, 2015, China’s Food Safety Law went into affect. It has been followed by a variety of draft regulations for the health food product industry some of which are still in the implementation phase. The latest addition to the health product regulatory system is the recording system for nutritional supplements (vitamins & minerals). Another category of interest by the industry is China’s Foods for Special Medical Purposes. Both topics and many more will be explored during the Nutrition and Health Summit. China’s dietary supplement industry continues to grow and is listed second in size to the U.S supplement industry, which currently sits at US$41 billion. China’s annual supplement sales figures are hard to come by as the market is not completely transparent, there are a variety of untracked channels and to make matters more difficult what is included under China FDA’s terminology of “health food products” is quite broad.
There are figures ranging from US$18 billion to over $US70 billion. The association feels the market is realistically closer to US$25 billion.
Cross Border e-commerce has grown rapidly in China for many industries mainly clothing, cosmetics and supplements. This mode of business is ideal for international companies as it allows easier access to China’s massive consumer base, which according to Mckinsey & Company will be 400 million by 2020. If we look China’s largest e-commerce company Alibaba, they already have well over 400 million active users, so the opportunity is immense.
