Ali Health, the health arm of the Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba Group, said in recent statement that its self-built “transparent laboratory” will begin official operation.

The lab is built based on national standard on quality control, and will conduct spot check over health food and nutritional supplements that are sold online. The relevant products must pass the inspection by the lab before being put on the online platform of Tmall.com.

In the past, Alibaba has conducted spot check and applied third-party inspections over products sold on Tmall, taobao and 1688. Those that were found problematic were taken off from the shelf. Those vendors who conducted illegal sales would be prohibited from operating on those platforms.

However, the previous inspections can only cover a very limited number of products, and takes a long time to proceed.

Alibaba said that the lab has been put into use to inspect relevant products sold on its online platforms. After the system becomes more matured, the company will consider spot check products sold on its platform. (Source: Shuzheng Kangxun)
