April 7, 2012 Beijing – USCHPA was invited by the organizers of the China International Health and Nutrition Industry Expo to give a speech at the opening ceremony and participate in a panel discussion about the the current dietary supplement and overall natural health products industry in China. This event is organized by Beijing Shibowei International Exhibition Co., Ltd with approval from the Ministry of Commerce.

This is the second year the association was invited to attend. The expo itself was larger than last year and had some bigger names at the event including Aland, By-Health, an NBTY authorized distributor of Natural Wealth and Greenfoods Corp. This is a good sign that the show is moving in the right direction. However, it still has a ways to go in terms of overall development. For example, many of the attendees were not qualified buyers, distributors or even part of the industry. Exhibiting here you’ll come in contact with retired people looking for free products. Also, the expansion from last year was due to a large increase of booths catering to the adult toy industry. There were also booths selling toy helicopters, binoculars and rifle scopes. Not sure how these exhibitors fit into the natural health products industry?

The panel discussion covered a variety of topics including how is the expo beneficial to the industry, what place does Traditional Chinese Medicine hold in the industry and the association’s favorite topic regulatory reform. The association’s Jeff Crowther discussed a need for industry regulations to be reformed and become more transparent. This he stated is essential in order for China’s dietary supplement industry to further develop and attract domestic as well as foreign investment.

If you are interested in doing business in China, it is a good show to visit to get a look at the domestic industry. It is also a good event to plan a market visit around. For example, visit potential partners, do some on the ground market research, go to the expo etc. An expo scheduled into your China visit will give you a well rounded impression of the market.
